Project
Great Hills Residence, Truro MA
This new three bedroom house sits on a narrow coastal dune which extends along the bayside of the Cape in Truro. The design maximizes 270 degree panoramic views that include Cape Cod Bay to the West, Pamet Harbor on the North, and a tidal marsh to the East. The open plan offers water views from all the primary living spaces and access to outdoor decks and porches.
The new house was required to be built upon the existing foundation to comply with local and state environmental protection policies. In addition, the conditions issued with the permit demanded strict adherence to an environmentally sustainable construction protocol.
As the living room faces South and West and receives additional solar gain contribution from reflections off the water, large roof overhangs offer shading while low awning and high clerestory windows provide natural ventilation. Further the large floor to ceiling windows and sliders are triple-glazed to reduce heat gain in the summer months and prevent thermal loss during colder months. Glazed walls are offset by super insulated natural red cedar clad walls where views aren’t critical.
